A kitchen splashback is a practical necessity in certain areas, but just because it is functional doesn’t mean it has to be boring. There are plenty of ways to create splashbacks that do the job admirably while also making a design statement.
Kitchen splashback materials
There are a variety of different materials suitable for use as a kitchen splashback, the main ones being:
- Ceramic tiles (the most common choice)
- Glass panels e.g Glasen
- Stainless steel kitchen splashback sheets
- High gloss acrylic panels e.g. Zenolite
Each has its own advantages and provides very different looks.
Modern or traditional
Ceramic tiles are the most conventional choice and are popular in traditional and period homes. If you prefer something more modern and eye catching, then stainless steel, glass or high gloss acrylic will give you that contemporary styling.
Making a statement
There are several ways that you can make your kitchen splashback into a feature:
- Choose a bright or dramatic colour
- Make a strong contrast between the colour of your splashback and the rest of the kitchen
- High gloss finishes are the most attention grabbing
- Use lighting to enhance your chosen material and highlight it
If you want to make an impact, you need to forget about the “rules” and do something completely different. Clashing colours or mixing modern and traditional design elements are usually considered no-no’s but will make a real statement if you are brave enough. Experiment with texture too, combining rustic textures with high gloss finishes for a really unique look.
